Re: the santa cruz rock | By Don Rothman on 4/7/2007 9:36 PM | | I was so glad to see this powerful installation this morning as I walked on West Cliff Drive. It has integrity and beauty, and it invites the community to renew its dialogue about creating peace and about the possibility that beauty and justice can be in the same conversation. |

the installation of peace rock | By peaceful warrior on 4/8/2007 7:47 PM | Some may wonder.... how the peace sign came to its home in Santa Cruz. A connection between peace lovers, a posse of Westside surfers, La Selva Trelle, an artist and a visionary all brought this beautiful stained glass art piece forward.
Friday night the waves were large, the swells pounded the cliffs. The sign was ferried to the rock amidst the gnarliest conditions. The strong swimmers lifted it up and placed it on its cradle. The challenge was the greatest I have ever faced in the Ocean surpassing even surfing exceptionally large waves. Technically, it took a team of trustworthy friends. Each of us was swept off the rock at least once by the powerful surf. I myself was swept off four times. This ain't your grandma's peace sign!
Now it shines in the light. It reflects the hearts of those who view it with peace on their minds. Imagine coast to coast..... peace rocks for all the world.
We are indeed fortunate to have this symbol for our community. Peace Rock On! |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By Catt Porter & Chazz Frichtel on 4/9/2007 1:44 AM | I live in Santa Cruz and my sweet man was up visiting from L.A...I know, I know...I am trying like heck to permantly get him up here to Paradise. Anyway, we were walking along West Cliff when all of a sudden we happened upon this BRILLIANT/BEAUTIFUL Peace sign on top of the rock. My first thought was "how in the heck did it get up there?" My second thought was "when was it placed there", since I hadn't seen it before today. I am so glad the story of the installation was entered here....now my inquiring mind has been satisfied...;>} Being one who experienced the 60's full force, PEACE in always in my heart and mind. Thank you to all who participated with this amazing feat...it is truly breathtaking and I hope it is a reminder to all who have the great pleasure of viewing it, that now more than ever we all need PEACE in our hearts and minds....Rock on with your bad self! |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By Beach Girl on 4/10/2007 7:02 AM | | I can't wait to get up there and see it in person. I love looking at the OB Peace rock. I caught the channel 10 news story and I was so excited to see that there would be another one and maybe more. It looked like it was pretty rough getting it up there and then to read the story about everyone getting tossed in the ocean at least once, that's true dedication. Thanks everyone for the inspiration, and especially to the incredible artist that created such a beautiful piece. |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By Grateful on West Cliff on 4/11/2007 6:50 AM | | What a gift! What an amazingly gorgeous piece of public art. Thanks to all involved in creating it and to those who took obvious risks installing it. May it last a very long time and be an important symbol illuminating this desperately important issue on our planet. Santa Cruz appreciates the beauty, the act, and the generosity. |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By Peace Rocker on 4/11/2007 11:02 PM | Alas . . .
Mother Nature 1 Peace Rockers 0
It seems that, despite our best efforts, we had not fully anticipated the relentless power of the Pacific (?) Ocean, and the peace sign was washed away last night. Call it a "Casualty of Peace."
But the path to Peace -- indeed, the very power of Hope itself -- cannot be diminished, and certainly not drowned, by one random Spring Surge from the sometime angry God Neptune.
Santa Cruz is a wonderful city, and DESERVES such an inspirational monument. Accordingly, the Peace Rockers from San Diego WILL return, and our Santa Cruz hosts and fellow Peace Rockers will not rest until another suitable site is located and conquered.
Peace is a process. Peace requires hard work. But Peace WILL prevail.
Peace Rocks Forever! |

Keep on truckin' | By Smiley on 4/12/2007 5:36 AM | | The wish for peace is in all our hearts, and the wish for a sturdy monument to peace will be found. The artistry is fabulous, the color palette works so well with nature's watery canvas. Keep producing and the spirit will move us all. |

The Great Spirit of Peace | By peaceful warrior on 4/12/2007 7:06 PM | To all well-wishers and contrarians-
The Peace Rockers will be back. First to remove the bracket and hardware and second to install our third sign. Where and when remains a mystery. What are you doing to promote Peace? Every voice needs to be heard.
The Peace Rockers work to bejewel and adorn the unfathomable beauty of Mother Nature. We are all one family. This international symbol of hope remains pure and simple and free. Join us in celebrating the beauty of Santa Cruz Peace Rock. Send us your photos, videos, thoughts, reminiscences.
May the Peace of the Great Spirit bless you! |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By from a friend to friend on 4/12/2007 10:53 PM | It has so much meaning, ya know, how you can think Peace will last, and then without even knowing, it it's gone. You have to appreciate it while it's here, and if you want it back, it's going to take a group effort. |

The next Santa Cruz Peace Rock | By W.C.walker on 4/14/2007 4:09 AM | | The sign was awsome!! Next time put it perpendicular to the waves so it will be safer (a lesson from the cement ship). Then it will also be viewed better be those traveling along Westcliff Drive, especially at sunup & sundown. Peace is for a purpose!!!!! |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By Local Environmentalist on 4/18/2007 5:14 PM | I loved the sign. The large waves spooked the birds more than the Peace Rockers. The birds have returned to roost on Peace Rock. No wildlife was endangered by Mother Ocean's masterful disposition of the sign. It was a radiant symbol and I felt blessed to see it. Thank you Peace Rockers! Worry not.... Carry on....
The Ocean and its wildlife is more resilient than words.....
Nature's great cycles, movements, and changes always prevail.....
We are fortunate to live in paradise. PEACE UNTO ALL. |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By A censored citizen on 4/25/2007 5:23 AM | | Why do you delete comments with which you disagree? Is that the type of peace you espouse? Many of us in the neighborhood in Santa Cruz near where your artwork was displayed agee with the message but think that the location was inappropriate, as it was placed in the Monterey Bay Sanctuary, home to many species of sensitive and endangered wildlife. Why can't you accept our concerns as legitimate? What do you only allow posts that unconditionally praise you? Curious form of peace-centered democracy that you follow. Try reading the 1st amendment. |

Re: the santa cruz rock | By Peace Rocker on 4/25/2007 9:30 AM | The previous post is legitimate, and it deserves an honest and thoughtful public response.
First, we AGREE we picked an inappropriate site for our Santa Cruz effort. We thought we understood the location. We made a mistake. To anyone offended or irritated with us, we apologize.
As to the birds, we're told they're back (and would have been back soon anyway, as they quickly were in San Diego). As to the debris we inadvertently caused, we have honest regrets and have redoubled our commitment to local beach clean-up efforts -- an issue we feel passionately about -- in an effort to "balance our account" in Santa Cruz.
We are TRYING to do do something positive, to inspire thoughtful and peaceful reflection, and we think in general our approach has merit. Far more people than not seem to agree, and many are truly moved by our effort. To the others, again, we apologize. Sincerely. On that, what more can we say? We know that not everyone will support our project, no matter WHERE we do it. But at least we're TRYING.
As to removing negative posts, we haven't had MANY, but we respect them all, and intend a thoughtful reply to those who write (though we are still working out bugs in our program to enable us to do that). Otherwise, we have recently edited this page to underscore that, HERE, we aim for only "POSITIVE Posts for Peace." That seemed to us a reasonable prerogative of the site we are trying to build.
If anyone wants to criticize our project, or vent at us, or share any negative thoughts at all, please feel free to do so (as suggested in the text for this page, above), by sending us a direct e-mail at the indicated link. We're learning as we go, and ANY input can only help us as we attempt to carry this project forward, hopefully making less mistakes the next time.
Santa Cruz is a beautiful city; and again, we're mostly just sorry we got it wrong this time out.
Peace and respect to all. Pass THAT forward. |

messages of peace | By JB on 4/25/2007 9:30 PM | | Thanks Peace Rockers for all you have done to lift spirits in the hope for peace. I like the positive posts for peace. I don't check in with your site to read a debate, I just want to see the imagery and feel the unity. The "talking about peace" posts are wonderful! Thanks for having a site where people can chill and feel positive about one potential future. Peace. |

My GOTO site for Comfort | By smiley on 4/25/2007 10:51 PM | | I find it so pleasant and comforting to view the peace sign either from the cliffs or anytime online! (These wave sounds are soothing). I dream the signs are popping up like mushrooms. When I am stressed out, this is the site I go to. Thanks for creating a great relief site. Here's to worldwide peace soon. |
