Re: the tradition of the OB rock | By Anonymous on 6/1/2006 11:07 PM | The artwork is beautiful. However, I think something more creative could have been done. Also, haven't peace signs been put up there before??? I also feel like the artists are thirsty for too much attention and/or bragging rights. The artists who made the crab, alien, tiki head, and pterodactyl never submitted photographs or details of the instalation or details of their identities to the press. Also, past artists never attempted to change the name of the rock. I think changing the rocks name would kill some of its identity and history. I know I will never call it peace rock just like I will never call french fries "freedom fries." Also, I hope the work doesnt survive up there for many years. I think it is more interesting, and more mysterious, and brings more smiles and happiness when temp projects are installed so that most of the time nothing is one the rock and then when something pops up its more of a surprise. The novelty of the peace sign won't last long. Anyways, sorry I was so harsh. I am all about peace myself but I think there are better things that can be done which are more creative, and contain fewer alterior motives.

Re: the tradition of the OB rock | By Anonymous on 6/1/2006 11:14 PM | Questions for the artisits: Are you trying to replace the artists who have made projects for the rock the past 4 consecutive summers? What if they were working on something to put up again this summer? Congrats on making something a lot of people like. But you have also killed an annual tradition.

Re: the tradition of the OB rock | By Anonymous on 6/2/2006 2:33 PM | I can't say I agree with a couple of the recent comments. The rock and art are Untitled and no one is changing the name of the rock. This Web site is probably titled because it sounds better than "rock in OB with no official name.com." Just because people are talking about the art, doesn't make it a negative. As for the peace symbol's longevity and an end to a tradition of changing art: chill. Just as Tiki Man moved on with the tides, so will the peace sign. Nothing is forever ... except perhaps a desire for peace. Why complain? Relax and enjoy.

Re: the tradition of the OB rock | By Anonymous on 6/2/2006 6:53 PM | | I can see some of what they other poster was saying. If I was the one that put up the other amazingly cool stuff, I think my panties would be in a bit of a twist over this new piece of art. However, I don't think it takes anything away from those other great works, just adds to the fun. Like they say, it won't be there forever, just enjoy it while we can. |

Re: the tradition of the OB rock | By Chip on 6/2/2006 9:27 PM | I love the fact that the rock changes "hands" every so often. Will it always be known as "Peace Rock."? No. But it is today. Peace has been "in" since the 60's. (Earlier than that?) After all, 'All we are saying, is give peace a chance.' In a way, it's kind of cliché to say "peace," yet who doesn't want it? I love the fact that the rock develops as time goes on. The first piece that was up there was cool. So was the second, and third, and so on. This one is cool and the next one will be, too. Thanks for changing the scenery. Peace, love, and rock 'n' roll, from a far away place.
